The AFYM exists to improve and widen music education. It provides performance opportunities and support in general for young musicians across the region. It is run by an honorary committee and supported by a host of volunteer stewards.
AFYM is an annual event comprising of competitive and non-competitive classes in Piano, Strings, Woodwind and Ensemble sections. There are classes for all ages and all abilities. Informal workshops are held throughout the six days of the festival which is held in three glorious venues at the Guildhall, Grand Theatre, Swansea and All Souls Church, Tycoch.
The event is part of the West Wales Grand Charity Rolling programme and has received an annual grant of £2500 since 2010. The Masonic Province of West Wales is one of the main sponsors of the event.
The Festival Concert is the culmination of a week or hard work and this year the Province was represented at the concert by W Bros Hywel Lewis and Mike Eckley. The Festival organisers also attempt to assist young and aspiring musicians by asking the public to donate any unwanted instruments to help students who are unable to fund instruments of their own. W Bro Mike was so impressed by the talent on display that he donated his unused flute to the charity!
