W Bro James Ross, Provincial Grand Secretary, travelled to Aberystwyth to present 99 year old Bro Howard Ryley’s 50 years Certificate. It was a small family occasion and was carried out with sincerity and dignity. Bro Howard was accompanied by his son, Bro George Ryley and daughter, Simone Jones.
James Ross’ address:
“Bro Howard, I am delighted to be with you here this afternoon. I feel very honoured to be making this presentation to you, and I only hope that my few words will do justice to the occasion.
Bro Howard, you were born on 5th August 1918, David Lloyd George was the Prime Minister. it was the day which saw the final Zeppelin attack on the UK and it was only three days before the start of the Second Battle of the Somme.
You became a Freemason at the age of 49, on 16th February 1967, a little over 50 years ago. A sobering thought is that, on that day when you were being admitted, I was only 1! In fact, I am only slightly older now, than you were then. But here we are today, brothers on the square. 50 years is a long, long time. I am in some awe of those brethren who keep going and give such long service to what is a fine organisation. To achieve 50 years’ membership of our institution is marvellous achievement. Whilst you have not been called to high office within the Craft, we must remember that such is the nature of our Constitution, that as some must of necessity rule and teach, so others must learn submit and obey; humility in each is an essential qualification. We should have but one aim in view, to please each other and unite in the grand design of being happy and communicating happiness. May brotherly love and affection ever distinguish us as men, and as Masons. Thus we learn to be meek, humble and resigned, to be faithful to our God and our Country.
Brother Howard, it now gives me great pleasure to present you with a certificate marking your 50 years’ continuous membership of the Craft, together with this lapel badge which I know that you will wear with pride.
Bro Howard, I commend you on your dedication and the example that you set to all”.
