At the 2010 meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge the Provincial Grand Master announced an innovation in the Province, namely the presentation of the Provincial Grand Master’s Order of Merit.
This is an award presented in recognition of outstanding service to Freemasonry, and is given to those who have distinguished themselves in keeping with the highest traditions of the Order.
W Bro Peter Harry Stacey Thomas was born in Llanelli on the 15th June 1930. He was educated at Llanelli Grammar School and Pagefield College Llanelli where he achieved the highest result in the country in his Accountancy Exams.
On 13th July 1957 he married Elaine and they were later blessed with a son, daughter, five grandchildren and most recently a great granddaughter.
He took over the family Coal Merchant business when his father passed away which he then turned into a very successful Haulage Company.
W Bro Peter was initiated into Unity Lodge No. 6709 on the 2nd February 1965 and as a young Mason was a founder member of the Trevor Kelway Lodge No. 8466 when it was consecrated on Friday 3rd November 1972. A momentous week in the history of Llanelli being the same week that his favourite Rugby team, “The Scarlets”, beat the New Zealand All Blacks Touring Team and when, as folklore states, all the Pubs ran dry.
He was installed as Worshipful Master of Trevor Kelway Lodge in 1977 and held the office of Treasurer from 1985 until 1993. During this time he also became treasurer of the Llanelli Masonic Council, an office he held until ill health caused him to retire this year. During his time as treasurer he provided the drive, enthusiasm and dedication that has left the Masonic Hall on a solid foundation for many years to come.
His dedication to masonry was recognised by his appointments in Provincial Grand Lodge culminating as Provincial Junior Grand Warden in 1993 and then to Past Assistant Grand Director of Ceremonies in Grand Lodge in 1999.
In Royal Arch Masonry, he was exalted into the St. Elliw Chapter, No. 671 in May 1966, became a founder member of Unity Chapter No. 6709 in May 1972 and was installed as First Principal in 1985. In St. Elliw Chapter he was installed as First Principal in September 2004. His dedication to the Holy Royal Arch was recognised by his appointment to Past Provincial Grand Scribe Nehemiah in 1993 and then to Past Grand Standard Bearer in Supreme Grand Chapter in 2004.
He is also a keen member of Kensington Lodge of Installed Masters No. 3667 holding various offices culminating in the chair in 2004.
Additionally, in the Ancient and Accepted Rite, he is a Past Most Wise Sovereign of both Llanelli Chapter No. 845 and Cornelius Chapter No. 1091 again holding the office of treasurer in both Chapters.
The office of Treasurer seemed to run in W Bro Peter's blood and he has been unofficially acknowledged as the “Chancellor of Llanelli Masonry”
The Provincial Grand Master has therefore decreed that his Order of Merit be awarded to Peter H S Thomas in recognition of his services to Masonry above and beyond that which might be expected of a Brother.
